Introduction to Panjab University

Panjab University has a long tradition of pursuing excellence in teaching and research in science and technology, humanities, social sciences, performing arts and sports-providing a platform for the fructification of ideas, knowledge and action. With an illustrious past of over 140 years, Panjab University is one of the oldest Universities in India, established in 1882 at Lahore, now in Pakistan. With its campus spread over 550 acres (2.2 km2) in two Sectors of the City Beautiful Chandigarh, the campus is a self-contained mini township.

By virtue of its age, experience, achievements and philosophy, Panjab University is a premier University of international character and stature, in so far as it draws its faculty and students from all over the country and abroad.

The University nurtures noble ideas, creativity, and innovation in its wide-ranging academic programmes covering different fields of knowledge and scholarship. The University is committed to attracting and supporting the best students and faculty, who excel at learning, teaching and research. Panjab University with its Campus at Chandigarh, 4 Regional Centers, 202 affiliated and 6 constituent colleges has been serving the cause of higher education and addressing the various social and civilisational needs and aspirations with distinction.

The University has carved a niche for itself as a premiere centre of learning and research and its faculty includes some of the most distinguished scientists and academicians. Over the years, the reputation of the University has grown as an institution making significant advancement in innovative teaching, research and community outreach

The University is committed to implementing the new National Education Policy (NEP-2020) by introducing changes in the existing curricula of UG and PG courses while incorporating the Indian knowledge system and promoting multi-disciplinary studies as essential features in alignment with the NEP framework and guidelines

Panjab University sets its aim at competing with Global Universities to assume the position of one of the leading global higher educational institutions for which it remains persistently engaged in disseminating creative, innovative and analytical knowledge reaching out to new ideas, perceptions and methodologies; arranging quality teaching, research, outreach activities; developing intellectual capital to meet societal needs and global challenges; enhancing soft skill and entrepreneurial skill sources; encouraging interface of inter­disciplinary knowledge; following diversity and inclusion; providing equal access to education and facilities without discrimination; establishing student friendly environs; developing eco-friendly ambience; focussing on experiential and digitalised learning; facilitating start-ups and incubation centres; promoting international and national collaborative research and education exchange programmes; linking academics with industry; improving knowledge of science and technology; placing Indian values at the core of modern education system for holistic growth of personalities.

In consonance with the Vision, the Mission of the University is to:

  1. To attract brilliant minds and to educate them towards all round development to transform them into confident, competent and ethical citizens with distinct academic and professional excellence.
  2. Introduce newer teaching programs inline with National and global priorities. Promote effective and inclusive teaching, training and assessment through online platforms.
  3. Create new, socially relevant knowledge base to address societal needs and challenges.
  4. Provide a congenial ecosystem with cutting-edge infrastructure for quality teaching and research with a view to develop core competency for sustainable growth.
  5. Undertake and encourage basic and applied research within and across disciplines with inter­departmental and intra/inter-institutional collaborations.

  7. Enhance transparency, efficiency and accountability in the administrative system by promoting a dynamic, decentralized and transparent governance system.

  10. Creating an environment and facilitating avenues for self-learning/ lifelong learning through online mode.
