2 | Department of Public Administration | Renewable Energy; Food Security and Nutrition, Health; Skill Development | The performance of the Department with regard to its MA, M.Phil and Ph.D courses is satisfactory. The Masters students were actively involved in field-based projects as part of their assignments. 3 | Department of Sanskrit | Vedas, Classical Sanskrit literature, Indian Philosophy, Sanskrit Grammar, Puranas, Ramayana and DharamShastras. | As the deptt. has Multi-specialization faculty in the fields of Vedas, Classical Sanskrit Literature, Indian Philosophy, Grammar, Puranas and Dharamshastras to provide guidance to the Research Scholars. The deptt. is encouraging projects of Research which deal with the issues on race, gender and environment likes status of women in ancient society, ecology and position of Varnas. Extension Lectures and workshops are organized for the Research scholars and MA students. The deptt. is also working towards the preservation of Sanskrit heritage through research on ancient texts like Epics, Puranas, Agamas etc.The deptt. also provide guidance to the students for the competitive exams of state level and all india level etc. We are Working towards the preservation of Sanskrit heritage through research on ancient texts like Epics, puranas, Agamas etc. and also Encouraging projects of research which deal with the issues on race, gender and environment like status of women in ancient society, ecology and position of varnas. The Department is also making a special role in Popularising Sanskrit by organising Sanskrit Day and Inter-University Sanskrit Competitions (Sloka Recitation, Extempore Speech, Sanskrit Kavi Sammelana etc.). The Department is Encouraging the tradition of spoken Sanskrit, the department organises Sanskrit Speaking Course. 5 | Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology | Specialization in Ancient Indian History, Heritage and Culture | 1. The department is committed to the vision of comprehending past with rationality, objectivity and critical perspective. We sensitize our students to the importance of heritage conservation and management. We introduce them to the agencies such as ASI and INTACH. Various webinars were organized by the department to acquaint our students with India’s rich Heritage. 2. The Departmental Museum houses antiquities collected from the excavation organized by the department. The Museum collection is utilized as a methodological tool for enhancement and understanding of the various M.A. courses taught in the department. The Museum collection also aids and helps Scholars of our department involved in Research work. |
6 | Department of English & Cultural Studies | Cultural Studies | The Department has graduated into a major centre of Cultural Studies. Our courses have a heavy percentage of contents which belong to the domain of Cultural Studies. Most of our research students opt for projects which fall within the rubric of Cultural Studies. In the years ahead, we intend to create corpus of critical writings on the Indian aspects of Cultural Studies. |
7 | P.U. Rural Centre, Kauni, Muktsar | Promote the quality of education among the students of Rural Area | Panjab University. Rural Centre Kauni has successfully risen to the Rural Education challenges. The institution has a very highly qualified and experienced faculty. The infrastructure is excellent. The building is spacious and there are big and airy classrooms. A new multi-crore state-of-the-art building is under construction to meet future requirements in academics, research and co-cThe institution is serving or imparting the quality of education among the students of remote area, particularly the educationally backward district Sri Muktsar Sahib. Along with the formal education, the director of the institution has engaged faculty and students in Online/ofline mode Seminars and webinars, sports meet and other such events like talent hunt competition, quiz competition, etc. In addition, since PURC Kauni has recently got NSS unit, field camps as per the norms of PU will also be organised. Besides teaching activities, Faculty has published new knowledge in terms of quality research publication. The centre is also trying to generate funds for the construction of building and other recurring and non recurring grants. |

9 | Centre for Police Administration | Policing | Thrust Areas of Teaching and Research of the Centre for Police Administration are Police Administration; Crime in India and ita various forms; Stress Amongst Police Personnel; Correctional Administration; Juvenile Delinquency; Police Reforms; Traffic Management; Training of Police Personnel; Police-Public Interface; Law and Police Administration; and Forensic Science. During the last fifteen years, Centre for Police Administration has done exceedingly well both in terms of teaching & research. It has not only produced large number of quality Human resources for the police agencies, but has also organized Special lectures/workshops for bringing awareness on various police issues. The Centre has been successful in sensitizing students and society for improving the image of police. 11 Ph. D. Research Scholars have been granted degrees and 20 research scholars are on the rolls of the Centre and are conducting research on different problems confronting the police agencies. |

14 | Dr SS Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engg. & Tech. | Materials for engineering applications and engineered nanomaterials. | Faculty is extensively involved in research in the areas like Materials Science and Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Sustainable Development and Nanotechnology, Core areas of Chemical Engineering, Non conventional/ Renewable Energy and Food Science and Technology and publishing high impact research papers (highest impact factor is 42) with journals like Nature, Physical reviews etc. TEQIP-II & III has provided funds for establishment and up-gradation of both undergraduate and Postgraduate laboratories with excellent characterization and testing facilities. Moreover, Dr. SSBUICET is a part of highly coveted Panjab University thus having access to the centralized facilities of the university. Our faculty members are doing high end research at international level. One of our faculty Prof. Sushil Kansal is recognized as top 2% scientists of the world in material science. the institute has high number of faculty publications and patents to its credit. |

It was inaugurated on 13th February, 2011. Having started its journey with just a half-an-hour broadcast per day, today the station proudly offers four broadcasts a day that include a total of nine programs running for over 10 hours. We plan to take the total broadcast to a 24 hour one; and provide a better and more efficient training ground for the community and also for the students of electronic media An Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC) is on its way to be set up in the School of Communication Studies. The foundation stone of the Centre was laid on 13th February, 2011. The EMMRC will be linked with the EMMRCs all over the country for making education more inclusive. The centre will also be able to produce socially relevant documentaries. We plan to make the EMMRC functional in the coming year. |

17 | Department of Defence and National Security Studies | Ugradation of Department | The deptt was establish in 2001. The deptt had proposed to establish Centre for research in Internal Security Studies to UGC under the UGC scheme of upgradation of the department of Defence and National security studies. The proposal of the deptt was accepted and is adjudged as on of the best deptt in the subject in the country. The deptt was also sanctioned special grant of RS.66.00 Lakhs for the purpose. The deptt has vision of establishing the centre of Excellence on ” internal Security” . The dept in its endeavour to achieve excellence in the field of academics has also been sanctioned a grant of rs. 2 crore by UGC for development of National Security Studies and upgradation of subject to the masses. |
18 | Department of Mathematics | Algebra & Number Theory, Continuum Mechanics, Operational Research Numerical Analysis. | The Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh was established in 1952 at Hoshiarpur and was shifted to Chandigarh in 1958. It has grown to be one of the best Departments of Mathematics of the Indian Universities. It has been recognized as Centre of Advanced Studies in Mathematics since 1963 by the UGC. The Department participated in COSIP program during 1970-1983 and subsequently in COSIST program from 1984-1989. The Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, had sponsored the Department for the FIST (Level-II) Program. The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) has granted the status of Regional Library to the Library of the Department and supports the Consortium for the online access of MathSciNet, for which the Department is the leading partner. The NBHM has been providing huge funds every year for books and journals. The Department is a source centre for Regional as well as National Mathematical Olympiad participants for the North-West Region. The Department is also zonal centre for the award of NBHM, M.A./M.Sc. and Ph.D scholarships awarded by the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India. At present, the Department has 14 regular faculty members and 2 UGC Assistant Professors in addition to 5 Emeritus Professors in this department. The faculty of the Department is bestowed with various honours such as Padam Bhushan, Srinivas Ramanujan Medal of INSA and ISCA, Jawahar Lal Nehru Award of ISCA, Megh Nath Saha Award in Mathematical Sciences, V.V. Narlikar Memorial Lecture Award of INSA, INSA Young Scientist Award, Narasinga Rao Medal of Indian Mathematical Society, B. C. Roy Award, Biren Roy Award of INSA, Bhatnagar Award, Fellowships of the three national science academies, Platinum Jubilee Lecture of Indian Science Congress Association, Co-chairman of International Conference on ‘Continuum Mechanics’ held in 1989, Vancouver, Canada, UGC National Fellowship, Young Scientist Award of UNESCO, Rostca, Sir James Lighthil Award Lecture(IMS), P.L. Bhatnagar Lecture Award(IMS), Srinivasa Ramanujan Memorial Lecture Award(IMS), Jawahar Lal Nehru Birth Centenary Fellowship. Several Faculty Members of the Department are members of various National Boards and Committees, Editorial boards of Journals and the Board of Studies and other academic bodies of other Universities in addition to those of Panjab University. Most of the faculty members actively collaborate with international community and have regularly visited several Universities in Canada, USA and Europe. They regularly participate in national and international conferences. The Ongoing Thrust Areas are Algebra & Number Theory, Continuum Mechanics, Operational Research Numerical Analysis. |
19 | Centre For Stem Cell Tissue Engineering & Biomedical Excellence | KIDNEY REGENERATION AND CANCER STEM CELLS & MESENCHYMAL STEM CELL DIFFERENTIATION PATHWAYS | The Department is focused towards understanding the pathophysiology of kidney diseases and associated mechanisms including AKI (Acute Kidney Injury), Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and ESRD (End stage renal diseases) etc. In addition another thrust area in which the Department is actively engaged is kidney regeneration in order to find a feasible and reliable solution for kidney transplantation in case of Renal Failures. It is also working towards a fight against Kidney Cancer through the identification of Kidney cancer stem cells and in understanding the differentiation pathways involved in mesenchymal stem cell differentiation upon administration of various herbal and nutraceuticals. |
20 | Centre for Social Work | Catering to the socially marginalized people in need and deprived poor and the disadvantaged groups. | Through out the COVID-19 Pandemic the Panjab University has supported the 270 migrant construction workers with their families living within the campus when the lockdown was announced. 24 | Department of Chinese and Tibetan Languages | Buddhist Studies | The Department is the nodal center in North area in the thrust area of Tibetan Buddhism/Himalayan Buddhism. Department is also providing research guidance in Buddhist Studies and Tibetan. Two doctoral degrees has been awarded to successful candidates in Tibetan Buddhism and third student has submitted her thesis. Add on courses were also introduced in Chinese Languages at UG level. Value added courses were introduced in Tibetan recently. |
25 | Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies | Gandhian | The Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies is engaged in alternative development action, research with considerable amount of success. We go beyond rituals and mere theoretical presentation and work for honest introspection and serious restructuring of our national priorities to achieve the social, economic, political and cultural goals for which the Mahatma Gandhi stood and died for. Gandhi left an unfinished agenda of making India a country without hunger and violence behind him for his nation to complete. And our Department is contributing in this in its own way. The overall performance of the institution is distinctive in sensitizing Gandhian Philosophy, various other social, political, economic issues among the students and the research scholars through various ways like workshops, research works, seminars, special lectures, etc. |
26 | University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences | Translational Research & Transfer of Technologies (T-o-T) | The faculty is actively working to bring in novel pharmaceuticals including phytopharmaceuticals, diagnostics, biosensors and technologies to the market with a focus to target current unmet medical needs in the areas of cancer, antimicrobial resistance, metabolic disorders including diabetes, skin disorders, regenerative therapy, ulcer/wound healing and neurological disorders. Initially the target is to develop aptamer/peptide-based biosensors for pre-identification of diseases and pathogens. In-silico tools or conventional synthetic pathways and drug discovery from natural sources are utilized to design or discover new drugs and/or repurpose existing molecules for newer implications and define novel biological targets. Further, novel drug delivery technologies will be developed to assign favourable bioprofile to existing or new molecules generating intellectual property. The promising drugs/drug products will be evaluated pre-clinically in suitable animal models to quantify response and assign mechanism of action followed by clinical evaluation to complete the cycle of lab to clinic. The developed technologies/ processes/ products would be out licensed. The institute promoted incubation of the ideas and start-up culture amongst younger sunder an existing Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC under MHRD) and pre-incubator at UIPS. Academic spin-offs realizing the ‘Make in India” and “Start-up India” initiatives of Government of India are the culminating intent of the proposal. Further, the faculty at the Institute endeavours to translate the established laboratory formulas to commercial scale. The T-o-T (Transfer of Technologies) from an academic Institute to the industry calls for generating faith based on the integrity of laboratory data. 27 | University Institute of Legal Studies | Post Covid Rearrangement, Strengthening and Creating Online Resources as well | After Covid-19, the department returned offline classes. However, online facility was continued and strengthening. The department also developed an I cloud library to augment the availability of online books/resources in all areas of law and social sciences to all the department students and faculty members. the availability of these resources can be checked by y the members of the university, offline and also online through the OPAC system. Also, the library has the latest versions of the lslim library management software based on cloud computing. lt enables easy access to the library resources 24*7. Furthermore, reputed journals are subscribed to and efforts are persistently made to make available all the sources and databases in the print and electronic form, so as to strengthen the research capabilities, across all fields of specialisation. During Covid -19 , the UILS library started a Remote access facility ( lProx ) for all its users. Various Electronic books and databases were purchased like SCC online, Manupatra, LexisNexis, AirOnline , Oxford E- Books and and Thomas preview etc and the same has been accessed by the user from their home also. department also developed a system for conducting online examination for department students. for the same special software was purchased by the department. |
28 | University School of Open Learning | Social responsibility of providing education at the door step | THRUST AREAS Our vision is to take university education beyond the four walls of the University so as to fulfill the prime social responsibility of providing education at the door step to those who are unable to access formal education. 29 | Department of Biophysics | Neurobiophysics and Cancer Biophysics | The department is continuously working in the field of cancer biophysics and neurobiophysics and has research papers, review articles, books and monographs in some of the high impact journals such as Journal of Biological Chemistry, Nanomedicine: nanotechnology, Biology and Medicine, Microchimmica Acta, Molecular Neurobiology, Biophysica Biochemica Acta, PLoS One, Neuropharmacology, Neuroscience etc. Department focuses in identifying natural products and plant extracts for the treatment of skin and colon cancer and recently have developed certain nanoformulations for treating skin cancer. Moreover, in neurobiophysics, department is working on development of therapeutic molecules and screening natural compounds to have potential to treat neuropathological diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease. |
