The institution has adequate availability and optimal utilization of physical infrastructure as it is critically linked to the vision of the University – ‘to create an environment of excellence in education’ through technologically advanced pedagogical tools.
At the beginning of the academic year need based assessment for replacement / up-gradation / addition of the existing infrastructure is carried out based on the suggestions from JAAC and the Technical/Purchase Committee after reviewing course requirements, budget constraints, working condition of the existing equipment and also students’ grievances.
All Departments/Centres/Institution of Panjab University has adequate, spacious, wellventilated, and well-equipped classrooms with Internet and Wi-Fi facilities. Computer Center has established a 10 Gigabit campus-wide Network to provide high-speed connectivity to departments through the National knowledge network (NKN). Further, the classrooms are wellequipped smart classrooms with LAN/ICT facilities. The Panjab University has excellent laboratory facilities for hands-on experience of students. Advanced laboratories are also available with interdisciplinary for students doing research as part of their degree programme. Besides this dependent upon the requirement of departments, there are Seminar Halls fully equipped with overhead/ LED projectors with screens, interactive panels, Graphical tablets, internet facilities, amplifiers, sound systems, etc. Teachers can conduct interactive online sessions with students, special lectures, video conferences, and seminars. For conducting various activities for the holistic development of its learners, various departments also have spacious well equipped, and ventilated auditoriums.
Every department has a well-equipped Library with rare Books, Journals, Magazines, both National and International Reports, Periodicals, and other reading materials.
Significantly, all library operations are managed by Library Management System (SLIM21). In addition, faculty and students make optimum use of the well-equipped A.C. Joshi Central Library.
The AC Joshi Library is a centrally-located and fully air-conditioned with a seating capacity of 500 readers.
It has over seven lakh publications and a prized collection of 1490 manuscripts. It is fully computerized and provides access to more than 7500 online full-text journals.
The readers can self-issue and return books anytime with the help of radio frequency Identification technology.
The outer reading hall is open 24 hours. It is one of the six National Document Delivery Centres of INFLIBNET for data information distribution.
The facilities like online Database, archival access to E-Journals, E-Books from Oxford, Cambridge, Sage E-books, E-Vidya Collection, E-Books from Karger, Wiley, Pearson, Springer, Thomson Reuters Proview, E-Resources from ICSSR, DELNET, Institutional Repository (Intranet) are available.
Many new services have also been introduced such as SMS service, Digital signage system,
Online Membership etc. JAWS software has been provided for visually impaired students, there
is provision to students to access information displayed on the screen via Zoom-Ex and text-tospeech which turns the computer into an accessible scanner, reader, and magnifier.
Besides this, the university also has subscribed to a wide array of software licenses such as Urkund plagiarism checking software and PROWESS database which caters to the financial data requirement of students and scholars.

The University has adequate and need-based infrastructure catering to different activities. In order to promote team spirit, sportsmanship and physical fitness, physical education is an essential part of the University curriculum
Directorate of Sports of Panjab University which was set up in the year 1948 has a large airconditioned gymnasium hall for in-door games of international standard.
University has a court/playground for all major sports such as a Badminton court, an International level Swimming pool, an all-weather swimming pool that has five lanes and stretches to 25 meters, an international standard 10-meter Shooting Range, 400 meters grassy athletic track (8 lanes), two basketball courts of international standard (with floodlights), four volleyball Courts, one hockey ground, two football grounds, two Handball Courts, two KhoKho Courts, two Kabaddi Courts, three Softball grounds, two cricket grounds, Two Synthetic Lawn Tennis Courts, Eight Grassy Lawn Tennis Courts, One Cinder Lawn Tennis Court, Outdoor Boxing & Gymnastics Arena.
University has a Gym for Boys & Girls, a Weight lifting hall, Judo Hall, Wrestling Hall, and two Multipurpose Halls for indoor games such as Table Tennis, Carom Board, and Chess. The Directorate of spots is a platform from where students use these facilities to their full capacity in their regular practices as well as in sports events.
For the last three years, the University has won the prestigious MAKA trophy. Many National and International Players have been nurtured and they have exhibited excellence.
The Sports Department is also focusing strongly on improving coaching techniques, modern scientific approaches, and augmentation of infrastructure.
Apart from that, the University has also its community radio station, Radio Jyotirgamaya 91.2, which acts as a unifying agent among the university faculty, students, and also the community. The radio programmes can be heard over a range of 10 kilometres.
In addition, to ensure the physical fitness of the university stakeholders, the university has separate gymnasiums for both men and women with fitness equipment & machines available during regular working days and holidays.
For cultural activities and yoga sessions such as theatre activities, fashion shows, film festivals, fairs/festivals etc., University has well-equipped auditoriums & Open Air Theatre, Law
Auditorium, Gandhi Bhawan, Exhibition Hall of Fine Arts, Parade ground, Playgrounds, Dussehra ground, and Big Ground, open green lawns which are being used by students for exhibiting dance, elocution, vocal music, instrumental music, national and state level cultural competitions, etc. University has also been a part of youth festivals over time and has won various awards for the same also. University observes and celebrates Festivals, National days, and large cultural events such as Diwali, Republic Day, and International Yoga Day at open places, auditoriums, as well as community halls as per the requirement of the day.
The university also provides courses and diplomas on yoga and meditation giving importance to the mental health of the students and their overall development. Faculty staff and students are encouraged to actively participate in yoga sessions organized on international yoga day. For the students who are away from their homes and staying in hostels, all the festivals and cultural events are organized for them with great pomp and show.

To make the university campus self-contained, it has its own Shopping Centre, Health Centre, Banks, Post office, Swimming Pool, Gymnasium, Sports Grounds, Botanical Gardens, Herbal and Rose Gardens, well-maintained parks, Open Air Theatre, Guest Houses, Faculty House, Seminar Complexes, Alumni House, Community Centre, and a higher secondary school. Besides these availabilities of the above facilities, there are twenty-two residence hostels for students on the campus, eight (8) for boys, ten (10) for girls, one working women hostel, and one international hostel. These Hostels accommodate approximately 7000 students. In addition to these, two sports hostels (one for girls and one for boys) with a dining hall, canteen, several desert and water coolers, a visitors’ lounge, and invariably an outdoor court for badminton, volleyball, a provision for indoor games, LED TV, internet connectivity through wi-fi facilities are available.
The protuberant buildings of Panjab University which form the hub of social interaction are Gandhi Bhawan, Fine Arts Museum, A.C. Joshi Library, and Student Centre. The three-winged structure of the Gandhi Bhawan with its artistic architecture is considered the pride of the University. The Fine Arts Museum, with its series of small galleries arranged around a courtyard, each gallery having a hyperbolic paraboloid roof (umbrella-shaped), is not only an architectural but a structural sensation as well.
Another key building in the University is A.C. Joshi Library, which is situated on the North Campus of the University. It has an RCC-framed structure with red sandstone veneers.
Another landmark building for social interaction at the university is the Student Centre, with its circular base and a ramp pulsating around its cylindrical body. The campus has a lush green
landscape interspersed with clean wide internal roads with adequate lighting facilities. The greenery is well maintained through a team of trained gardeners. The cleanliness of campus is a kind of mission to be followed by everyone.
The banking facility of State Bank of India, Canara Bank, and ATM facilities are provided on the campus services to both staff and students. Multiple eating joints are provided at thestrategic locations on the campus.
First aid facilities are available in the University labs, hostels, etc. Dedicated cleaning staff maintains the cleanliness of the toilets regularly.
The internal roads are wide, plain guarded by dense foliage. The regular maintenance of internal roads is done by the maintenance department.
Signboards for the entire campus are placed at all the entry and exit points. Within the campus different academic, and administrative sections and amenity spaces are identified through proper signage.
Bhai Ghanaiya Ji Health Centre is a fully equipped modern clinical laboratory, the latest computerized ECG machine, and a fully computerized digital 500m mammographic compatible CR unit x-ray machine. The health centre provides general and specialist medical consultation to the students, employees, and their dependents. Around-the-clock emergency service along with a 24X7 ambulance is available. Health check-up camps and Blood donation camps are held at regular intervals.
The Dental Institute(HSJIDSH) of the University not only serves its employees but also the neighbourhood community offering comprehensive dental care.

USOL organizes Personal Contact Programmes (PCPs) for a period of six to fifteen days (4-7 hours per day) per semester for different programmes. Attendance is mandatory during PCP in each semester.
The schedule of PCPs is issued in advance in the Prospectus of the respective session as well as on USOL website. Time-tables are also uploaded on the notice board and on the website. Students are oriented towards the requirements of the programmes during orientation sessions and also by sending them the schedules and time-tables through e-mails.
Along with the full-time dedicated faculty, academic counselors from regular departments of the University as well as from the affiliated colleges are invited to take classes during PCPs. Besides, expert lectures are also organized for the students by inviting senior professors of the parent university, other universities and also experts working in the field (such as CEOs for M.B.A. students, Senior Officers from Defense force for Defense students and others also, school Principals and Counselors for B.Ed. students, Writers and Poets for Language students). During PCPs, a variety of teaching techniques are used to ensure maximum participation by the learners. These techniques include interactive lectures using Questioning, Discussions, Student Seminars, Projects, Quizzes etc. Teachers also use ICT during teaching-learning sessions in the form of PPTs, Audios, Videos etc. Apart from provisioning study material covering the whole syllabi, teachers recommend many reference books, journals, and other online resources for additional readings. Teachers even take students to the departmental library as the USOL library is enriched with around one lac books, encyclopedias, a number of journals and educational magazines.
Besides PCP classes, students are allowed to consult the teachers physically in the department on all working days and also online through e-mails, WhatsApp etc. for their academic queries. Teachers also send the relevant material to students through e-mails.
Along with PCPs, USOL organizes workshops for students for development of employability skills and other competencies. During workshops, soft skills, interview skills, ICT skills are taught by experts from the field. Career orientation programmes are conducted to widen the outlook of the students about the world of work. To unfold and nurture the creativity among students, co-curricular activities are conducted regularly. For promoting the writing skills, Creative Writing Competition is organized annually. Students may participate in Essay, Story or Poetry writing competition in three languages (Hindi/English/Punjabi). Students are also encouraged to write articles for USOL magazine. Besides, ‘Hunar’and Sports Day is also our annual feature. Through Hunar, students’ horizon of thinking, their speaking skills (debates), their promptness to respond (extempore), creativity in designing (best out of waste, rangoli etc) photography skills, poetry recitation skills are encouraged and nurtured. For stimulating physical fitness and mental wellness, USOL organizes Sports Day as well as Yoga and Meditation Day. Besides all this, important days are also celebrated. Sensitivity to society is also instilled by encouraging participation in NSS programmes.
As a result, our goal is to help our distance learners develop holistically, and we make every effort to do so.

PU Library is fully computerized with an integrated system connected to the North and South campus network. The AC Joshi Library building is centrally air-conditioned, equipped with a network and has more than eight lac volumes. Besides this library has books, bound volumes of journals, theses/dissertations, rare books, reports, government documents, back files of newspapers, and a prized collection of 1492 manuscripts.
The Panjab University library is fully computerized, and its assortment can also be searched through the web OPAC. The beneficiaries of the library can access On-line catalogue facilities which are available at the Reference Hall, Transfer Cell and near the Circulation Section of the Library. The reference collection of the Library is continuously updated.
The AC Joshi Library has its independent web page. The e-resources can be accessed through the Campus network and also there is a remote Access facility. The library has an in-house database of e-resources, books, journals, (Online and Print) e-books, thesis, and other reading materials. These resources can be accessed through the Library website.

The Library has 20 online databases including Science Direct, Scopus, IEEE, ACM Digital Library, Institute of Physics, EBSCO, ProQuest Dissertation & Thesis Abstracts, India stat, Districts of India etc.
Beneficiaries can draw books from the Library on loan after they have secured their membership Pass Books/Reader’s Tickets, duly signed/facsimile stamped by the Librarian. All physical access to the library facility is digitally taken and hence provides the utilization of the library. Furthermore, the university provides access to the thesis and the work of research scholars in the respective libraries of the departments.
The plagiarism checker software is provided by the library for scholars to make the research journey of the scholars an easy ride. The library also has access to about 15000 + core and peerreviewed online journals and 14 bibliographical databases from publishers & aggregators in different disciplines through the e-shodhsindhu consortium of INFLIBNET. A platform for research students to submit their PhD theses and make them available to the entire scholarly community in the open national online library.
The process of computerization in the library is through TECHLIB plus integrated library management software. Salient features of the PU library include:
1.The Library has fully implemented RFID Technology along with new Integrated Library Management Software (SLIM21) to facilitate efficient auto issue/return of books, better stacks management, inventory control and an improved security system for books in the Library.
2.At the entrance of the Library there is a Drop Box facility for 24 hours for returning books.
3.PU Library provides Online Membership and SMS alerts for the user’s account.
4.There is a Wi-Fi facility installed in the Library to access online journals and databases on the laptops.

Panjab University ensures IT resources to support the educational, instructional, research and administrative activities of the university for all stakeholders including faculty, researchers, students, administrators, staff, and parents. This includes two aspects, one is data storage, retrieval and analysis, the second is access to worldwide information networks while preserving the safety and security of information.
The IT policy is fully operational and has ensured a support system and has been duly approved by the syndicate (Nov 19, 2011) and is available on the official website of Panjab University. Panjab University Chandigarh provides all faculty, students and staff with a modern, fully networked computing and IT environment for academic use. The salient feature of the PU IT policy is to provide technical and computing support for the researchers, students and faculty for enhancing their academic and research productivity. Users of Panjab University Chandigarh computing, networking and IT facilities are expected to abide by the well-drafted rules, which are intended to preserve the utility and flexibility of the system, protect the privacy and work of students and faculty, and preserve our right to access the international networks to which the system is connected.
All the departments, centres, administrative offices and hostels are Wi-Fi enabled. The faculty, students and staff are offered free unlimited access to academic material within the academic area, along with technical support. For connecting to PU’s wireless network, a user shall
register the access device and obtain one-time approval from the competent authority before connecting the access device to the PU’S wireless network.
The facility is used primarily for academic and official purposes and to a limited extent to a personal purposes using the facility for illegal/commercial purposes is a direct violation of the university’s IT policy and may entail withdrawal of the facility. Panjab University has a strong IT and telecommunication network alongside infrastructural and operational efficiency playing a pivotal role in teaching, learning and research activities.
University provided the email facility for official purposes and to faculty by logging in with their user ID and password. For obtaining the university ‘s email account, the user may contact the computer centre for the email account and default password by applying a prescribed proforma.

The continuous upgradation of the University website (www.puchd.ac.in) is done as and when required. Important academic and administrative information is disseminated via a website to various university stakeholders viz. students, parents, faculty, officers, affiliated colleges, vendors, and citizens. Various online application forms are made available to students and affiliated colleges to avoid unnecessary visits to the University office.
The entire multimode optical fibre network is replaced with a single-mode fibre network for better performance and covers the entire campus.
Internet facility is provided to every laboratory and classroom in all the departments on the campus. A proper procedure is set to expand the wired network as and when required. Students, faculty and officers are given free Wi-Fi facilities.

The university has spacious, well-ventilated and equipped classrooms with internet and Wi-Fi facilities. There are smart classrooms with LAN/ICT facilities, computer labs, and seminar halls equipped with overhead/ LED projectors with screens, amplifiers, sound systems etc. The University has a well-defined policy and system in place for the maintenance and utilization of all these physical and academic facilities. For example, a need-based assessment is undertaken at the beginning of every academic year for replacement / up-gradation /addition of the existing infrastructure There is a construction office, Glass Blowing Lab, Mechanical workshops, and AMCSs for the maintenance of both infrastructure and instruments.
There are laboratory safety showers, eyewash stations, and fire extinguishers to provide protective measures to minimize causalities. General instructions are displayed in each lab regarding safe usage while in the laboratory.
The Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam Computer centre providing computing and Network facilities to whole of Panjab University Campus. Network is secured with hardware firewall installed at computer centre with three wide area network links of 1 Gbps (NKN) 1 Gbps(NME-ICT) 311 Mpbs STM2(1:1)airtel followed appropriately giving access to Wi-Fi and internet all around the North and South campus of the university to the students and teachers of the University. They provide Fibre Optic high-speed network connectivity through Gigabit technology to all the Departments, Centres, Hostels and Administrative Block.
The Computer Centre is connected through the National Knowledge Network (NKN) and the National Mission of Education through Information and Communication Technology
(NMEICT) networks. All the hostels and Academic areas of Sector 14 and Sector 25 Panjab University Campus are covered by Wi-Fi. All the faculty, students and staff can access it seamlessly. The Computer Centre is hosting all the servers (like DNS, Mail, and Web Server) in its data centre and provides facilities like online admissions and entrance tests.
The library operations are managed by Library Management System (SLIM21). The A.C. Joshi
Library(Main Library) has a special facility for visually impaired students –PCs with JAWS, Zoom Ex software, Horizon A3 Scanner, Lex Software etc. The University has its website to host date sheets, results, examination forms, online entrance and admission forms for the

The University has been awarded the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) trophy three times consecutively for excellence in games and sports at the All India Inter-University level. The maintenance of sports ground and sports equipment are undertaken by a sports committee.
Bhai Ghanaiya Ji (BGJ) Institute of Health caters the health facility to about 40,000 employees and their dependents, students of all the departments, daily wagers, contractual employees, mess and canteen workers. A round-the-clock emergency service, along with a 24×7 ambulance, is also available.
The classrooms and computer labs in each department are well maintained and taken care of by the infrastructure committees and members of the infrastructure cell of various departments. Overall maintenance of physical infrastructure is done by the construction branch of the university.
