IQAC Team Felicitates Vice Chancellor: A Celebration of Leadership

In a significant development, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has conferred Panjab University with the prestigious Category I status, acknowledging its outstanding contributions and academic prowess. Deliberating on Panjab University’s proposal during its 579th Commission meeting on April 16, 2024, the UGC deemed it fitting to grant the university Category I status under its Regulations of Categorisation of Universities for the bestowal of Graded Autonomy, 2018.

This accolade places Panjab University among the select elite institutions recognized by the UGC, aligning with the commission’s mission to uphold global standards of excellence by empowering high-performing institutions and fostering excellence in higher education.

The attainment of Category I status endows Panjab University with the autonomy to initiate new courses, programs, departments, and centers within its geographical purview without the necessity of UGC approval. Additionally, the university can establish research parks, incubation centers, and university society linkage centers independently or in collaboration with private partners, without the need for commission endorsement. Furthermore, Panjab University is now empowered to offer courses through Open and Distance Learning mode, independent of UGC approval.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig extended commendations to the faculty, students, and staff for their pivotal role in achieving this milestone, urging them to sustain their commitment to societal responsibilities with unwavering dedication. She underscored the noteworthy accomplishments of the academic session, including the prestigious A++ rank awarded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and notable enhancements in global university rankings by renowned institutions such as THE and QS, alongside significant strides in fostering innovation.

Expressing gratitude, Registrar Prof. Y P Verma attributed this success to the erudite leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig, which has catalyzed marked improvements across all facets of the teaching-learning process and university rankings.

This recognition by the UGC, coupled with recent accolades and advancements, marks a momentous chapter in Panjab University’s journey towards academic excellence and innovation, reinforcing its commitment to shaping the future of higher education.
